SUPPORT HANTSPORT SCHOOL P-8Option 1: Summary: L.E.Shaw becomes new middle school (grades 6-8) Hantsport Wolfville and Gasperau become grade P-5. Hantsport gets the grade P-5 from L.E.Shaw.
The first reconfiguration option for consideration would be to create a separate middle school serving all students in grades six to eight presently in the four schools.
This would be accomplished by converting LESES to a stand alone middle school and redistributing the Primary to grade five population of that school to HS and WS on the same basis that the grade 7 students from LESES currently are distributed which is approximately 65% and 35% respectively. This move would require some renovations to the LESES facility, most notably an expansion of the gymnasium to an appropriate size for middle level students and the modification of some instructional spaces to accommodate Technology Education, Family Studies and Science. These renovation costs would be partially offset by the removal of the need to upgrade these facilities at HS and WS as they would no longer be required.
The impact on the other schools would be most significant at HS and WS which would become Primary to five elementary schools only. HS would be less affected numerically as it would receive the majority of the students in grades Primary to five relocated from LESES. WS would become considerably smaller which would reduce the scope of renovations that would be required at that school.
The benefit of the smaller size is that there would be an opportunity to expand the exterior spaces of the school by reducing the school’s footprint. The creation of a consolidated middle school would allow for better programming opportunities for all the students at this level.
This scenario also provides the best balance of student numbers and overall space utilization of the three middle school configuration proposals being examined.
Option 2: Summary: Wolfville has local P-5 plus all grade 6-8. Gasperau, Hantsport & L.E.Shaw become grade P-5 only. The second option for consideration would be to have GVES, HS and LESES become Primary to grade five schools with all grade 6, 7 & 8 students consolidated at WS in a Primary to grade 8 configuration. HS would be the most affected in this scenario as it would be losing the most students without the offsetting Primary to grade 5 students that would result under the first option. This option would allow for the establishment of the consolidated middle school program at WS but would have to be delayed until the renovations of WS were completed in 2016.
Option 3: Summary: Hantsport keep local P-5 and have all grade 6-8, Wolfville, Gaspereau, and L.E.Shaw are grade P-5. The third option for consideration would be similar to the second except that the grades 6, 7 & 8 students would be housed at HS in a Primary to grade 8 configuration with GVES, LESES and WS all becoming Primary to grade five schools. WS would be the most affected in this scenario becoming smaller than in the first option but as in that option would have the opportunity to create more exterior space for the schools students.
Option 4: Hantsport and Wolfville are grade P-8. L.E.Shaw and Gaspereau are grade P-5 These are the options that would allow for the consolidation of middle level students in one facility. If this cannot be achieved, then there is one other option for consideration. This option would have both HS and WS operate as Primary to grade 8 schools with GVES and LESES becoming Primary to grade five schools. Their students would move to HS and WS at grade 6 rather than grade 7 as they currently do. This would allow for a grades 6 to 8 middle school to be established at both locations although they would remain small. HS and WS would remain relatively the same size as with their current configuration while GVES and LESES would become somewhat smaller, reducing by one grade level.
