Factsheet and key messages


The AVRSB instigated Phase one of a school study in 2008 to begin exploring the future of the Eastern Kings system, up to and including the possible closure of one or more schools in our area In response, the Town completed a multi-phase public input process and comprehensive study.

Findings included:

  • Every town in the province has a school
  • Small schools are preferable to large schools
  • Hantsport has an excellent economic base
  • Our town is affordable for young families
  • Our school could expand its footprint if needed
  • Our community stands behind our school
  • Our school and community maintains very strong links
  • Our business community is highly dependent on the school
  • Many people choose to live in Hantsport because of its local school

The Town of Hantsport received nearly $3 million for school facility improvements in 2009

  • Late in 2009, the AVRSB followed up with Phase Two of their study, outlining 4 options for redistributing students in our region Hantsport participated in a public hearing arranged by the AVRSB in late 2009 and held additional communty meetings to talk about the future of the Hantsport School
  • Our community stands in agreement that we must retain our school.
  • Town Council voted to advocate for maintaining our school for P-8 students
  • The Town will submit a follow up report to the AVRSB in early 2010
